Nicholas Brendon, known for his role as Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, appeared at HellmouthCon in 2017. This is our community’s response to his passing and the complex experiences that followed.

We have learned of the passing of Nicholas Brendon, known to many as Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Nicky appeared at HellmouthCon in 2017. For some fans, that experience was positive and meaningful. For others, it was not. Both of those truths exist, and both deserve to be acknowledged.

At Hellmouth Events and Fandom Charities Inc., our role has never been just to host events. Our role is to protect the fandom, to create an environment where fans feel safe, respected, and valued.

That responsibility shapes our decisions, including who we invite, how we respond when things don’t go as intended, and how we move forward.

Nicholas Brendon’s life reflected a reality that extends far beyond fandom, the complexity of addiction. Many people are doing the ongoing work of recovery every day. Others struggle in ways that impact not only themselves, but the people around them.

We can acknowledge that reality without erasing the moments of connection he had with fans, and without dismissing the experiences of those for whom that connection was not what they hoped it would be.

This is not a tribute. It is an acknowledgment.

A recognition of the role he played in something that continues to bring people together, and a reaffirmation of our commitment to protecting the community that carries that forward.

We hold space for all who are processing this news in their own way.
